Carbon black pigments

Carbon black pigments are produced by thermal oxidative dissociation of suitable oils by the lamp black-, furnace black-, and gas black process. The furnace black process is the most important with about 95 % of the total production.

Primary particle sizes range from 10 to 100 nm and can be reproducibly produced. Carbon black pigments are offered as powders and also in pearled qualities according to the handling requirements. Densities in compacted form are between 100 and 500 g/l.
For special applications - especially in paints and printing inks - oxidized forms are offered. Forms of delivery are bags from 10 to 25 kg, big bags or silo trucks.

The worldwide production is about 7 Mio tons per year, about 90 % of which is used as a reinforcing filler in tires and other rubber articles. The remaining quantities are used in plastics, printing inks and paints. The main purpose of their use is their chemical inertness with high colour strength as mass tone as well as in toned down applications. There is a huge variety of other effects, where the excellent UV protecting properties and antistatic properties are the most outstanding ones.
